A*Men Pure Malt: Thierry Mugler’s Toast To Scotch Whisky

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

A*Men Pure Malt is the most recent interpretation of Thierry Mugler’s A*Men. Pure Malt was inspired by the Scottish peaty whisky which is redolent of sensual woody accents thus creating an exciting malt experience, gourmand style. Aged in oak barrel, this limited edition variant of A*Men is a cocktail of luxury spirits with a distinct boozy note that balances the food-y notes of the fragrance.

Pure Malt smells a lot like A*Men Pure Coffee (2008) sans the coffee, of course. It is rather a paled version of A*Men but the gourmand character is still noticeably pronounced. The top notes are suggestive of booze then transitions into toffee-malt sweetness. The dry down evokes warmth with just a slight dose of patchouli and bits of vanilla musk. Pure Malt is less intense in terms of potency. The creaminess brought forth by the woodsy and malt whisky undertone is pleasant without being too cloyingly sweet. The sillage is quite average as compared with the earlier flankers. Since Pure Malt is a tamed version of A*Men, longevity is not at par with the original. The boozy-caramel aroma cascades nicely in the beginning then gradually peters out in the dry down. The toasty gourmand accords hold longer in the dry down making the fragrance just as refined and elegant the first time you smell it.

Some perfume pundits have this notion that flankers are nothing but a ho-hum iteration of the parent- they simply lack creativity. Fragrance houses try to more creative with the notes to either strengthen the formulation or tone it down a bit to make it more softer. Pure Malt is a well-executed fragrance and that is what makes it different from other flankers. Fragrance aged in oak barrel? That’s how creative Thierry Mugler is and that is just his fragrance portfolio. His cosmic haute couture is another story.

On the whole, the boozy notes in A*Men Pure Malt make it very manly. Would Thierry Mugler venture in incorporating booze accords in the women’s fragrances like Angel? That will be an interesting olfactive-experience to look forward to.

A*Men Pure Malt is available in 100ml eau de toilette. More Thierry Mugler perfumes and colognes at discount perfume retailer, scentiments.com.

Perfumes and Colognes by Donna Karan

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

Over the years, Donna Karan has played advocate of comfort and style in her designs. Her work bespeaks the basics of clothing with a touch of class and mystique. She knows what a woman needs and indeed, her fashion house attests to that. The burgeoning label spawned a suite of product lines ranging from women’s clothing, jeanswear, accessories, kids’ apparel and fragrances. But what makes the label click?

In the haute couture segment, Donna Karan is best-known for her wrap dress and tailored bodysuit. She also explored cosmetics which was previously headed by her deceased husband, Stephan Weiss. As for the fragrance collection, Donna Karan has some of the most popular scents in the perfume industry today. Talking about fashion, her collection unravels simple and classic designs meant for the modern woman. On fragrances, it’s a playful mix of the past and the present. The more distinct names include the iconic Be Delicious line, Cashmere Mist, DKNY Gold and the more recent, DKNY Love From New York.

Being a true-blooded New Yorker, Donna Karan incorporated the stylish diversity of the city in each of these fragrances, the most notable of which is Be Delicious. Inspired by the Big Apple, this fragrance is apples galore. The notes are a bunch of crisp green apples and the bottle is shaped like an apple, what else?

The Cashmere Mist collection is likened to the ethereal beauty of a woman. It straddles between the  soft floral and woods ensemble to the austere melancholy-inspired mystery of deeper notes. Its beauty is beyond the years and what’s more interesting is how cashmere brings forth an intimate luxurious appeal to the senses.

DKNY Gold is an explosion of pure white lily. It’s like one of those designer florals that project itself  even from a distance but in a pleasing kind of way. The mingling of lily, vanilla, spices and woods hold for hours long after the initial application has dissipated. It’s a good thing if you fancy lily-based fragrances.

Love From New York endeavors to capture the energy of falling in love with the Big Apple. According to Marketing Manager Louise Marchesin, “New York is as much a state of mind as it is a destination,” This fragrance aims to encapsulate all the little moments you can’t forget, such as walking hand-in-hand in Central Park, or a late-night ferry ride across the Hudson. It’s all about falling in love in, and with, New York, whether you live there or are just passing through.” Looking at the notes, it’s floral and citrus notes paired with blonde woods and apricot at the base. Hopefully, this fragrance commands as much energy and romance as seen in the ad campaign.
