Mexican Clothing

Monday, October 12th, 2009

Modern Mexican clothing differs little from that of other North American cultures. Mexican clothing products in the modern world features the usual standbys, such as shorts, jeans, shirts, and sneakers. Lighter clothing is typically the choice, both in color and style, because of the sometimes oppressive equatorial heat. Mexican clothing in large cities of the modern era does not really differ much at all from that found commonly further north, such as in American cities.

Traditional Mexican clothing, however, varies greatly from the norms of other North American cultures.  Combining Mexican and imperial Spanish influences, traditional Mexican clothing is very distinctive. Traditional Mexican clothing can be found worn on a variety of holidays. The Day of the Dead is the biggest of these traditional holidays.  Traditional Mexican clothing combines Spanish heritage with pre-Spanish influences.  Of that ensemble, the Sombrero probably provides the most recognizable icon.

The traditional “charro” suit is another recognizable element of Mexican culture, frequently seen when worn by mariachis.  Originating with pre-Spanish culture, the charro suit also has religious roots.  The charro suit is very popular at a variety of Mexican events.  Other traditional Mexican clothing includes a mixture of European influenced outfits, with a dash of colonial Mexico mixed in.  These outfits can typically be traced in their influence to imperial Spain.  Mostly unchanged in their style, these Mexican outfits also typically feature added touches like a cape or hat.

The sarape is an easily recognizable Mexican article of clothing. Consisting of a vibrantly colored garment that usually has a fringe, the sarape is collected both on a vintage basis and produced new. The sarape is a combination of Mayan culture with that of the Mexican poncho. The sarape is traditionally made in the Mexican state of Coahuila, and sold to city dwellers, as well as tourists passing through.

The rebozo is another popular Mexican clothing, worn most often by women. Usually produced in vibrant colors, the rebozo is most commonly used as a shawl or scarf, and can range in price from that of a very inexpensive garment to a chic designer item.  These are just a couple of the popular items in Mexican clothing.

Learn About Renaissance Clothing

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Renaissance clothing was very frequently about ostentatious designs that displayed the wealth of the wearer. The renaissance saw the rise of a new and elite merchant class, and they often sought to show off their new found wealth through their clothing. Renaissance clothing products ranged from the simple and utilitarian design of the peasant, to the elaborate clothing of the merchant and royal classes. Renaissance clothing can often be seen in theatrical and film portrayals, as this is a popular age in history.

Renaissance clothing for a peasant usually meant something very simple, usually made out of wool, that served its purpose day in and day out.  The peasant typically only had a few sets of clothes, so renaissance clothing of this variety usually had to be both sturdy and long lasting.  The peasant was primarily concerned with utility, and not style.  Garments were frequently made out of tough materials like wool, and so were not very comfortable, although they could last for many years.

Surviving renaissance garments are rare, because clothing tends to break down and disappear over time.  Although the structures and writings of the renaissance are well preserved, the clothing of that age remains only through records.  Through that writing, and through drawings, however, the style of the age is still well preserved.  Renaissance clothing typically focused on displaying wealth. Womens renaissance clothing typically emphasized their features with vibrant bursting colors, long trains, and elaborate jewelry.

The royal and upper class mens clothing of the age had a similar focus in promoting the knowledge of their wealth and status. Renaissance clothing commonly focused on emphasizing the presence of wealth with an ever shifting focus on style. Styles shifted just as frequently during the renaissance as they do today, or perhaps even more.

About Medieval Clothing

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

Medieval clothing depended largely on the social and economic status of the wearer. Poorer individuals often were forced to dress in the equivalent of nothing more than rags. A peasant in the medieval age, or worse yet the Dark Ages, often had to make do with just a few sparse robes or tunics. Wool was the most common material of the day, with scratchy undergarments the order of the day. Washing clothes, and bodies for that matter, was done only rarely. At the upper end of the economic scale, royalty often wore extravagant clothing to show off their status and wealth.

Upper scale medieval clothing products was as much about showing off wealth as it was comfort. In fact, much medieval clothing of the royal variety was most likely very uncomfortable. Intended more as a display of wealth, royal medieval clothing commonly featured elaborate styling and extravagant flourishes. Womens medieval clothing, for example, often featured long trains and elaborate jewelry. The mens medieval clothing was often equally elaborate, featuring complex designs of fabric and colors.

If you have seen any of the modern reproductions of medieval clothing, common in movies such as Braveheart, you know that the clothing emphasized the display of wealth. For poorer denizens of the medieval ages, clothing was much more about utility than comfort or style.  At the opposite end of the spectrum, people in the royalty worked to emphasize style more than anything else.  Styles changed from to season to season, much like today.
